In the past, we have talked about Albert Pujols, one of the most exemplary Dominicans we have not just in baseball, but in the world of sports period, for all the Dominican charities that he partakes in. It is with great pleasure that today we get to talk about another Baseball player who is also following in the footsteps of Albert. This time, this years winner for the Roberto Clemente Award was not Pujol’s (he won in 2008,) this time the focus is on the work of David Ortiz, another Dominican baseball player making us all proud by giving back to his community.
He expected fellow Dominican Pujols to be a two time winner. When the announcement was made Pujols went to the field and hugged Ortiz
“Special thanks to my teammates who have always supported all the initiatives of the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, you guys are family to me”
tweeted Big Papi today after receiving his award, he states to always have been a fan of Roberto and notes him as a big inspiration for him.
The Clemente Award recognizes the player who best represents baseball on and off the field with a strong focus in giving back to the community, named after the 12-time All-Star and Hall of Famer who died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.
David says he attributes his start of helping children in need when he walked into a hospital in the Dominican Republic in 2005 and seeing sick children who needed help, he started the David Ortiz children’s fund and it has been 5 years and going strong raising millions of dollars along the way.
